Highlights
  • Marathon Lake - The Marathon Lake is an artificial lake, about 45 km from the center of Athens, which is used as a water reservoir to supply the city of Athens with drinking water. The dam was constructed from 1926 to 1929 to cover the capital growing irrigation needs after the huge immigration wave that followed the Asia Minor War (1919-1922). This was the sole water supplier for Athens until 1959 when water was pulled from Yliki Lake, close to the town of Thebes.

Follow the history - We took a second tour with Perikilis and it did not disappoint. This is a tour that is designed for someone who is interested in the both the history of the Olympic Marathon but in the Greek battle of Marathon. The drive to the lake takes you thru hill farming country where locals are hard at work. After the lake you spend some time at the Olympic Marathon museum. If you are a runner this museum is very cool with lots of history. Afterwards you head over to some archeological sites of the city and another museum with nice artifacts found in the area. You then visit the tomb of the soldiers buried from the battle before heading into town to see and tour the Olympic Stadium if you wish. Not to long of a day filled with many interesting sites.
