Highlights
  • Las Medulas Natural Monument - Departing from León, we head to Las Médulas, situated roughly 25 km away from Ponferrada. Recognized as a World Heritage Site, Las Médulas were once Roman gold mines where the ‘ruina montium’ technique was employed for gold extraction during the 1st and 2nd centuries, with the gold being shipped straight to Rome.

At the outset of our excursion, we’ll stop by the visitor’s reception center at Las Médulas to watch a 15-minute film detailing the history of Las Médulas. Following the documentary, we’ll join our guide outdoors to commence the tour. This walking tour is led by a guide and spans approximately 2 hours. (It is advisable to wear appropriate outdoor clothing and footwear). As we traverse the area, we’ll witness the dramatic transformation of the landscape due to mining activities, as well as learn about the methods used to extract gold.

Upon concluding our tour, we’ll transport you to the city of Ponferrada, the heart of the Bierzo region. Here, you’ll have some free time to relax, dine, and explore the city at your own pace. Make sure to visit the well-preserved Templar Castle, the Basilica of the Virgen de la Encina, or the Monastery of Santa María de Carracedo. Ponferrada is brimming with enchanting nooks and crannies! We’ll head back to León at 5:30 p.m.
