Best Guide and So Much Good Food - We went off shore today for a three hours Taste of Kotor food tour recommended by Rick Steves. Our host was Bogden, and his family has lived in Kotor for over 600 years. He should work for the federal office of tourist because he was an encyclopedia of everything Montenegro. We started with a local lady who sold olives. We tasted about eight different kinds, and liked the roasted ones best. Who am I kidding, they were all good. Participation trophy for all. A local meat and cheese vendor let us taste traditional prosciutto and then a beef version of the treat. We also had soft and hard cheeses from the region. We tried the national liquor called Rakija which was supposed to boost your appetite. It worked, that was the last time we ate responsibly all day. We had another cocktail at stop number three, Amaro Montenegro. Also popular in Bologna, because the queen of Montenegro married an Italian king and brought it to that city many years ago. Stop four was where things fell off the rails. Bogden insisted it that guests must eat all the food served at a table. We tried, but it was a lot of food. We ate four dozen mussels and two baskets of bread with five dipping sauces. Also a keilbassa-like meat. The sauces included fresh churned butter, a smoked fish in olive oil, a spicy red pepper spread, a creme and herb dip and a potato and onion puree. I gave up after my second basket. Good local white wine too. Stop five was wonderful because we had octopus risotto tossed in the black ink from the same animal. This time we had red wine, Vranac, with the meal. The vineyard is run by the government and is one of the largest in the world. Good full-bodied red. Stop six, mercifully was the last for an espresso and cake (of course it was huge). We ate about half and then tapped out. We highly recommend this tour. If you get Bogden as a guide it is a bonus!

Great guide and amazing food and information - Nikola was our guide, and we can thoroughly recommend him. The tour group was small, being myself and my two parents. It was a great dynamic, as we felt we could ask any questions, and received great information. The food was delicious, and we learned so much about the day to day life in the country. It was a highlight of this trip to Europe.
