Additional Information

Found on Lake Victoria is Ngamba Island, a 95-acre jungle island that started as a fishing community. It later transformed into the Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary in 1998, courtesy of a collection of local and global entities who shared the goal of offering a protective shelter for rescued and orphaned chimpanzees.

Chimpanzee Tracking at Ngamba Island

The Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) saves these chimpanzees from poachers, but reintegrating them back to their original habitats often proves unsuccessful. As such, Ngamba Island serves as their secure and nurturing home.

Beautiful and inspiring day trip - Would definitely recommend this visit! From when I booked, the communication about arrangements was great, really prompt and clear which is always reassuring when you're going somewhere by yourself. Diana was an absolutely fantastic guide, so friendly and enthusiastic, and very kindly took lots of extra photos for me when I was worried about running out of battery! The journey to and from the island itself was a great experience, even in slightly rough weather on the way out. The setting on the island is so beautiful, and Philip, who introduced us to the sanctuary and led the tour, was brilliant - so knowledgeable and with contagious passion for the work the sanctuary is doing. Seeing the chimpanzees, their relationships with each other and with everyone who works at the sanctuary was incredible, I left completely inspired by it all. There are also so many amazing birds everywhere! There's also a gift shop with lots of really lovely souvenirs crafted by women living on neighbouring islands.

Must see for animal lovers!! - Amazing experience! By going to Ngamba Island you not only get to see these beautiful chimpanzees, you are also financially supporting this top notch rescue effort, a win-win! Myler Safaris was fantastic and helped me book this experience last minute when I had a free day in Uganda.

A good experience - The main tour guide picks you up from the city and takes you to the boat docking area, you enjoy a boat trip, then a guide takes over on the island - joined up. Only 4 out of 5 stars because it is a bit pricey. If you have cash you could save money doing the stages yourself.

Way to expensive - The chimps and the island was fine the reason for the low rating is the value for the money. Already was expensive costing $240 for the trip supposed to be from 9am to 3pm. Was only 15 minutes from my hotel. I was flying out that night so wanted something to last most of the day. Was very surprised when they had me back from boat ride at 12:30 not 3! Was on the island only 2 hours total. I explained my trip was supposed to end at 3 pm but fell on deaf ears.
