Highlights
  • Ship Palace (Jahaz Mahal) - This 120 metre long ‘ship palace’ built between the two artificial lakes, Munj Talao and Kapur. Talao, is an elegant two-storeyed palace. Probably it was built by Sultan Ghiyas-ud-din Khilji for his large harem. With its open pavilions, balconies overhanging the water and open terrace, Jahaz Mahal is an imaginative recreation in stone of a royal pleasure craft. Viewed on moonlit nights from the adjoining Taveli Mahal, the silhouette of the building, with the tiny domes and turrets of the pavilion gracefully perched on the terrace, presents an unforgettable spectacle.

Additional Information

Hovering above its own mirror image, the Jahaz Mahal in Mandu resembles a vessel poised for departure. Nevertheless, through the ages, this edifice of rock and lime has not ventured forth. Rather, it has perennially hovered above the adjacent lakes, silently testifying to the extensive, luxurious, and diverse saga of Mandu.
The metropolis of Mandu is embellished with captivating Afghan edifices amidst baobab vegetation, indigenous to the African continent. The majestic courts are still infused with tales of nobility and love, while the portals (darwazas) echo the epochs of regal conquests. A stroll through Mandu will render you astonished, reminiscent of the feelings stirred by ancestral narratives.

Mandu is an ancient fort city - Mandu is an ancient fort city in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh. It's surrounded by stone walls dotted with darwazas (gateways). It's also known for its Afghan architectural heritage. Landmark buildings include Hoshang Shah’s Tomb, a domed marble mausoleum, and the vast Jami Masjid mosque, with courtyards framed by colonnades. The imposing, centuries-old Jahaz Mahal palace stands between 2 lakes.

Mando in the monsoon - Fabulous ruins. If you see the place at leisure, it requires two days to see most of the monuments. It can take more too if you are into looking at architecture of yester years. Jahaz mahal has so many buildings and each worth looking. It takes you beyond . If you can plan the trip in monsoon, the lovely gray keeps you enchanted in the backdrop of these buildings. Nowa days with hinduisation of stories around interfaith love stories, more needs to be seen and read than heard by guides. This has so much more than just a lovestory . The whole area, about radius of 50 kms is filled with Baobab trees. The fruits and seeds are sold as safed imli. Can go there again and again.

A Day Well Spent - Mandu is situated approximately 75 km or 2 hour from Indore. There are two routes to reach this place and road condition is good on both these routes. It is recommended to visit Mandu during Nov to Feb as otherwise weather may not be conducive to roam and visit various monuments. There are number of places to visit and the best one is Jahaz Mahal which will take maximum time since there are other places/monuments inside the same perimeter. The important places are Jahaz Nahal, Jal Mahal, Hindola Mahal, Shahi Hamam, Museum, Nahar Jharokha, Champa Baodi, etc. The other places worth visiting in Mandu are Sunset Point, Lohani Caves ( not so great), Chaturbhuj Temple,Vijay Stambh, Jami Masjid,Hoshang Shah's Tomb, Baz Bahadur Mahal and Rani Roopmati Pavillion. All these places are within 7 kms. Total time required will be one day. You can enjoy the local cuisine called Dal Bafla or Dal Paniya which one can taste. Overall a great day to spend at Mandu.
