Highlights
  • Day 1: El Gouna to Luxor

In the early morning, a private air-conditioned vehicle will take you from your El Gouna hotel to Luxor for an overnight trip. Upon arrival, you’ll be introduced to your personal tour guide to start your journey with:

Madinat Habu temple:

An ancient site known as Djanet where it is believed Amun first appeared. Temples in honor of Amun were built by Hatshepsut and Tuthmosis III and later a grander memorial monument was erected by Rameses III. During that period, Djanet evolved into the administrative centre of Western Thebes. The temple complex was barricaded by a fortified wall complete with a unique gateway at its east end, reminiscent of Syrian migdol fortresses. This echoed Rameses III’s military background.

  • Ramsseum:

Ramesseum, the mortuary temple of Ramses II (1279–13 BC), was crafted on the Nile west bank at Thebes, Upper Egypt. Well-known for its enormous 57-foot statue of Ramses II, of which only pieces remain today, the temple was dedicated to the deity Amon and to honor the late king. The partially-preserved Ramesseum’s walls are adorned with intricate reliefs depicting the Battle of Kadesh, Syrian campaigns, and the Festival of Min.

  • Deir El Madina:

The chief burial grounds for the royal laborers at Deir el-Medina are on the western shoulder of the Theban mountains. Dominated by tombs from the 19th dynasty, some are large and elaborate. In the 20th dynasty, tombs became final resting places for descendants of the original occupants. Subsequent generations altered the tombs only to add an additional underground burial chamber. Infants and children were buried lower down in the eastern hill of Qurnet Murai, often in group burials in common pottery jars, chests, boxes, or coffins. The most basic burials were those for stillborn children. The adults lie higher up in tombs dating mostly to the 18th dynasty.

  • The valley of The Queens:

The Valley of the Queens, also called Biban el-Harim, Biban el-Sultanat, and Wadi el-Melikat, is an ancient Egyptian burial site for Pharaohs’ wives. It was referred to as Ta-Set-Neferu or ‘the place of the Pharaoh’s Children’ as it also houses the tombs of several princes, princesses, and nobility from the 18th, 19th and 20th dynasties (1550-1070 BCE). Mortuary priests maintained these tombs, offering daily prayers and offerings for the noble deceased. The valley, less known than the nearby Valley of the Kings, was selected for its relative solitude and proximity to the capital, Thebes (now Luxor).

  • This necropolis reportedly contains over seventy tombs, many of them grandly adorned. An example of this opulence is Queen Nefertari’s resting place (1290-1224 BCE) from the 19th Dynasty. Her tomb’s vibrant reliefs remain in place to this day.

The ancient Egyptians named it Set Neferu, or ‘seat of beauty.’ Between 1903-1906, an Italian expedition discovered about eighty tombs, including those of royal offspring. Unfortunately, many were severely damaged due to misuse as stables or by fire. Among the most famous tombs is that of Nefertari, a favored wife of Ramesses II, who constructed a beautiful temple in her memory at Abu Simbel.

Great 2 Days In Luxor - Well organised tour with an ontime pickup at the Hotel in El Gouna. Our Tour Guide Hoda joined us in Luxor and went with us to all major sites of Luxor. She has a great knowledge in the history of Egypt and a great English. Unfortunately it was too windy, so the hot air balloon got cancelled.
