Highlights
  • Galle Fort - Galle Dutch Fort - Having absorbed the resilience of the local populace as depicted in the Tsunami Photo Museum’s exhibits, our journey takes us next to the Galle Dutch Fort. This historic fortress has witnessed numerous events over the centuries, owing to the city’s prime maritime trading position, which also made it a focal point for the island’s colonial conquerors. Initially constructed by the Portuguese in the early 1500s to safeguard and maintain the city, the fort was later significantly reinforced by the Dutch in the 17th century. The original fortifications consisted of a simple earthwork complemented by wooden stakes, a defensive wall, and three bulwarks, all encircled by a moat. Under Dutch rule, the fortifications were strengthened using coral and granite, transforming the Fort into a fortified town characterized by a systematic rectangular street layout, lined with quaint houses featuring gables and verandas.
