Waimea Canyon

Hawaii's Grand Canyon

Waimea Canyon

Waimea Canyon is a photographer’s dream. Crafted by fire and water, the canyon’s dramatic beauty is a result of millennia of volcanic activity and heavy rainfall. Although nicknamed the Grand Canyon of the Pacific, this 14-mile long expanse of rippling rust-colored earth and deep green foliage is a showcase of decidedly tropical terrain. Unlike many of us, it’s at its best in the clear, cool mornings but regardless of whether it’s glazed with sunlight or crowned with clouds, this sublime landscape puts on a captivating show. And you hardly need to leave the car to witness its majesty. Those who pull over at windswept lookouts around the canyon are treated to magnificent vistas of 3,600-foot peaks, colorful plunging chasms, white falls, and the architect behind the valley itself–the Waimea river. Those who opt to give the zoom lens a rest can stretch their legs on any of the canyon’s many trails, including one to the top of the two-tiered, 800-foot Waipo’o Falls. With free admission and year-round accessibility, Waimea Canyon is one of the world’s best bargains…with scenery that’ll make anyone a compulsive shutterbug.

Review

What an amazing sight! After spending the morning further up the mountain at Koke'e State Park, we enjoyed the afternoon at Waimea Canyon. The views are fantastic! I wasn't the only one snapping picture after picture. The canyon is beautiful in every direction! We stopped at every lookout just to see the different views. We didn't hike any of the trails. To do justice to Koke'e and Waimea, we probably should have planned two days in the area.
