Learn how to ride the waves from the pros on Kauai’s North Shore. Start by observing the ocean and reading wave sets, and find out about surfing “rules of the road” from big wave riders. Learn paddling skills and positioning on the board before you head into the water. Lessons begin in the calm Hanalei River and continue into the bay where you’ll pop up on your first wave. Choose standard surfing or SUP (stand-up paddling), both available for private or group lessons. Bring the kids or send them to their own surf “camp”, which includes 3-4 hours of instruction and practice. This was the first Hawaiian surf school on the North Shore of Kauai; instructors are all big wave riders and competitive surfers.

I decided that I wanted to learn to stand-up paddle this trip so booked a lesson. David was a great teacher. Although I thought I could have gotten by without a lesson, I realized quickly that I would have never picked up the proper paddling technique, which is the key to success. After about 15 minutes on the Hanalei River we turned around and headed into the bay.
