Spouting Horn

Legend has it a giant lizard once guarded this stretch of the south Kauai shoreline. Upon chasing an invader into a lava tube, it became stuck and languishes there to this day. Visitors can still hear its pained cries at Spouting Horn, a blowhole that frequently bursts 50-foot spouts of seawater into the air. The cry begins as a deep growl as the water rushes through the narrow lava passage before it’s forced skyward in a hissing plume of incandescent spray. This incredible sound–likened by many to that of a dragon–sets this “puhi” apart and has established this spot as a popular attraction. Set on a dramatic dark rocky coastline, this phenomenon is at its best during high tide and at its most beautiful at sunset. Regardless of when it’s witnessed, it’s an understated, unusual, and unforgettable exhibit of natural beauty…the stuff of legends.
