North Shore Beaches

With a bewitching fusion of rugged cliffs, sandy shores, and turquoise waters, it’s little wonder this coastline is beloved for its beaches. It doesn’t matter whether you’d rather explore, laze, wipe out in epic fashion, or recreate a classic film moment–it’s all here. And it’s helmed by Hanalei Bay, a 2-mile crescent that courts sunbathers and sporty types in equal measure. Surfers particularly enjoy taming waves here as well as at the world class tunnels on Makua Beach. Or join the happy masses exploring Ke’e’s sheltered lagoon before ascending the Kalalau trail, the gateway to incredible Napali Coast vistas. If heights aren’t your thing, you can go deep at Anini, a beach protected by Hawaii’s longest reef with depths that draw swimmers, windsurfers, and shore divers. Or get a little dangerous at Lumaha’i. Hugged by verdant tropical foliage and cushioned by soft white sand, Lumaha’i is notorious for both its picturesque allure and its strong undertow. This beach was made for walking and it’s got the views to warrant the workout. Hollywood thought so too, choosing to film scenes from South Pacific here–but with its spectacular natural beauty, any stop along this unforgettable coast delivers cinematic drama.

Review

The North Shore is incredibly beautiful - and in June it should be wonderful. I personally would recommend Hanalei Bay Resort - a wonderful, "Old Hawai'i" style condo resort in Princeville spread out over a large area with beautiful tropical flowers and trees and some condos with fantastic views of Hanalei Bay and Mt. Makana (Bali Hai) - the pool is one of my favorite on island - a meandering, sand-bottomed pool with waterfalls and also some lovely views.
