Highlights
  • Blue Penguins Pukekura - Otago Peninsula’s largest penguin colony, see up to 200 blue penguins arrive home from a day at sea (more seen over summer than winter). In the non-breeding months (March to August) we expect between 20 - 100 penguins each night.

We will offer viator refunds of 70% if we see less than 5 penguins !

The tour starts with an introduction to the human history of this significant headland, occupied by M**ori long before European arrival.
A special “behind the scenes” walk through the penguin reserve prior to the birds returning from sea. An opportunity to understand the nesting habitat and see the restoration work to enhance the environment for penguins and other wildlife. Then just before dusk we move onto our purpose-built platform to marvel at the world’s smallest penguin species returning from sea. Watch penguins waddle past us just a few metres away. One of the closest and best opportunities to see our special wildlife in their natural habitat.

Experience the fantastic sight of up to 200 blue penguins arriving from the sea at dusk! Most penguins are witnessed during the spring/summer seasons, as compared to the autumn or winter. Still, we guarantee you’ll sight penguins each night!! In the non-breeding period, from March to August, it is common to observe 20-50 birds per night, but occasionally, the count could be less than 10. Get an extraordinarily close view of these creatures. Acquire knowledge about the significance of this site to Māori history. Our tour also includes a unique behind-the-scenes peek at the reserve and the penguin’s habitation.

We stand out as the only evening tours for blue penguins that permit photography (flash photography is not allowed).

Natural animal observation - Great tour. We have seen several penguins walking from water to the land. We were allowed to take photos and videos without flash light. Everything is natural. Great experience!

Perfect penguin evening!! - This was an awesome experience. We felt so privileged to be able to see the penguins in their own habitat. The guides are very knowledgeable and it was just so interesting! Wow - perfect evening - pity the time flew by! I could’ve stayed a lot longer if I could.

Fascinating talk about blue penguins and then seeing them on the beach after dusk - There was an interesting talk about the lives of blue penguins and then we went out to view the adults arriving back on the beach to go to their burrows after the day feeding at sea. It was a great evening.

Magical evening with the penguins - Our evening with Blue Penguins Pukekura was fantastic. When we pulled up to the centre, the albatross were wheeling about overhead, which was beautiful to see. Once inside, we were given a talk about the penguins and the history of the area while we waited for the sun to set. It was really interesting and added some fascinating context to the rest of the evening. Once you head down to the shoreline (down many stairs - be prepared for the return trip up), we found a spot on the viewing platform and after about 10 minutes saw our first penguin (and a seal!). We visited right around moulting season, which means less penguins that at other times of the year, but we still saw about 3 different groups (or "rafts" as we learnt) come in. It was a magical experience watching them swimming in, waddling up the shore, and hanging around with each other 'socialising' outside their burrows. Our guides were on hand to explain what they were doing and answer any questions, and they made sure we all got a chance to get closer to where the penguins were. This is a well run operation and a really worthy conservation cause to spend your time and money on - I would really recommend it!

A true highlight! - ADORABLE!!! I was sorta nudging my friends to come to Dunedin with me to visit my friend on our whirlwind NZ trip, and found this adventure. I think my friends said yes to humor me, BUT at the end of our trip (Queenstown/Dunedin/Wellington/Auckland) they felt this adventure was a true highlight! Educational and well... breath taking watching these beauties emerge from the waters.

Absolutely brilliant. A must do in Dunedin. - The guides were very informative and helpful. We loved every minute and saw about 30 penguins return from sea and others came out of their burrows to stretch. The sound they made was brilliant too.
