Highlights
  • Dinokeng Game Reserve - Dinokeng Game Reserve is Gauteng’s largest “Big Five” wildlife sanctuary, 1 hour, 40 minutes north of Johannesburg and 40 minutes from Pretoria. The popular sunrise (6 a.m.) or sunset (4 p.m.) game drives are the best times to look for the Big Five. A game drive session’s duration is typically 2 hours and 30 minutes on the open-back 4x4 trucks driven by the resident game ranger, who will narrate fun facts about the park while navigating through the vast, dusty trails. Hippos, elephants, rhinos, lions, buffaloes, giraffes, zebras, kudus, jackals, impalas, wildebeest, and crocodiles are among the popular sights to look forward to. Each truck seats a total of 10 adults, so the rangers will have more time to answer all your individual questions about the wildlife. Bottled water and snacks are provided during a mini-break halfway through the tour. Pick up and drop off in an air-conditioned sedan or minivan from your hotel in Johannesburg, Pretoria, or the O. R. Tambo International Airport.

Disappointing experience - My previous review was for the Dinokeng Game Reserve half day drive. Very nice and professional driver and people, but no siting's of large animals. For what they charge, they should attempt to go to the known areas from previous tours where the larger animals have been.

Somewhat disappointing - First, I have to say that I understand that the animals are free roaming, and there is no guarantee of which wildlife we get to see. However, both the person who drove us and the guide made strategic errors that made our experience mostly disappointing. First the good things. The driver who picked us up in Pretoria was friendly, well informed, and the vehicle was very comfortable. The guide too was well informed, passionate about the wildlife and friendly. We saw rhino, antelope, impala, monkey, and jackals. The first problem was that we were picked up 90 minutes after the agreed time. We sat in the lobby waiting. He had traffic, but that should have been anticipated. We began the safari hours after our scheduled time. Then, the guide made a few strategic errors that greatly diminished our experience. He asked us at the beginning what we wanted to see. We said cats, zebras and elephants. He wasted 30 minutes trying to view a lion deep in the bush, and then took an unnecessary break that ate up the diminishing sunlight, and then informed us it was now “too late” to see the elephants. A more efficient use of time would have given a better experience seeing how late we began.
