Great experience and great day! - My sister and I did the Batik class while staying at Mador hostel. We spent the day with some other travellers from the hostel and Nuu from Mador which was great. We went to a local house where we learnt about the batik process, we made our own from the drawing, waxing and colouring stages. We were provided with lunch and snacks of a variety of local foods which were great! Overall we had a great day at the batik class!! And at Mador hostel in general!! Thanks guys!

Fantastic experience - We did the batik class with our two girls (8 years old) and it was absolutely amazing. The settings and the people were delightful, the lunch included was delicious. We highly recommend this activity. They also went out of their way to make the fabric ready for us to bring on our journey onwards.

Fun activity - We were searching for a activity which was relaxed and this was it for sure! It was a lot of fun and the teachers were very experienced and helped us a lot. It is nice to be creative and even if you can’t draw you are able to do this because you they have a table with a lamp and examples with you can draw over. Also the lunch was very delicious! A perfect day and the end result is a very special souvenir which fit easy in you backpack.

Organic Batik Class through an NGO - My friends and I had been looking for the right kind of batik experience and we were delighted to find this Organic Batik Class which is a women's co-operative run by a local NGO called Yagazu. We booked the class through our hostel in Malang so we had transport to the workshop, but I think it can be booked separately. We were welcomed warmly when we arrived, were given water and a little explanation of the batik process, the organic dyes used etc. It was wonderful to watch the women at work, their skill and patience but also their bond and friendship with one and other. We were given time to draw our designs, with patterns to trace from if we wanted and then guided in the waxing and inking process. Sadly some of our ink ran when the wash was done, but this was because we were in a rush and the ink had not tried. We were given a delicious lunch, prepared by the women as we were making our designs and we left feeling like we had become part of their group. I highly recommend this experience!

Worth a cultural try - Kudos to Martha (the local representative) for the prompt follow up after the booking of the workshop is done. On the day of experience, Namira was the guide that hosted me. She is amazing in attending to my curious questions. Enjoyed the batik making session with explanation of the different steps involved in making a batik by the guide. It's a long process that requires skillful hands & patience. Upon completion of the final design with wax, there is a need to sun dry for before a fixer can be added to ensure colour was retained. Thereafter, required to sun dry again before placing it into a boiling water to remove the wax. As i'm leaving the following day, the artisan escalated the process for me. Huge thanks to the artisan, I was able to take home the batik done within the same day. It was a good experience. It'll be great if there is a segment that participants can witness how the colour dye was made to make the experience even more complete. :)
