The native inhabitants and day workers struggled to construct roads with limited resources. Built halfway between Puerto Nare and Medellín, the roads led to Guatapé, a small village. This was a point of arrival and departure for mule drivers, instrumental in enabling trade throughout the whole Antioquia region.
