Additional Information

Home to Girona’s most significant collection of art, the Girona Art Museum offers an exclusive glimpse into Catalan art. The visitor’s journey orchestrates a chronological exposure to a variety of artwork including paintings and sculptures belonging to different ages and styles such as Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, realism, modernism, and noucentisme.

The journey begins with a piece of an early Christian tombstone from Empúries. The collection comprises prominent pieces like the liturgical ensemble of Sant Pere de Rodes (9th century), the Usuardo Martyrology (a miniature book from the 15th century), and a notable collection of altarpieces from the 15th and 16th centuries.
A temporary exhibition titled ‘Explosions of an instant, 70s. The contribution of the artists to the art collection of the Avui newspaper’ is on display from February 25 till January 28, 2024.

Following the Cathedral, the old bishop’s palace stands as one of the most architecturally grand buildings in the city.

Insightful and fascinating museum - Great thing to do in Girona, took us about 1.5 hours. Bring headphones so as to use the audio guide on your phone, as it made the experience much more insightful. I was surprised at the amount of fascinating pieces and some points were breathtaking. Really highlights the history of the city and Spain in general. Mostly religious artwork, and there were some great views of the whole city at the top. Definitely recommend doing if visiting for a day.
