Highlights
  • Our journey begins and ends at this very spot.
Gallipoli, a quaint fishing town, gained prominence due to its thriving olive oil export industry. Intriguingly, during the medieval era, olive oil wasn’t utilized for culinary purposes, but for a different reason we’ll help you uncover!

  • Our journey leads us to a small hamlet, to explore a subterranean olive mill dating back to the 17th century.

  • Off the beaten path, amid olive groves and unique dry-stone structures (Trulli and Pajare), we’ll arrive at Galatone. Here we unveil the grand Norman castle, the Church of the Crucifix - a breathtaking example of Lecce’s baroque architecture - and a stately palace.

  • Our adventure takes us to Porto Selvaggio, an impeccably preserved natural park with crystal clear waters that beg you to plunge in! The park features natural springs that intermingle with the sea. We’ll take a swimming halt and enjoy a leisurely lunch.

  • Delve into Messapic culture with a visit to ancient tombs and a meticulously curated museum exhibition.

Additional Information

Gallipoli served as the epicenter of Salento’s large-scale oil trade. It was from this place that oil was transported across Europe, illuminating cities and homes alike. This trade led to exceptional wealth in the city and neighboring areas, evidence of which remains visible today.

We will set off on our bicycles toward Sannicola, located in the interior regions. Here, we will explore a historic underground oil mill from the 17th century. As we traverse the countryside, with vineyards and dry-stone walls coming into view, we’ll get a glimpse of Galatone’s historical center. Following this, it’s back to the seaside to relish the raw beauty of Porto Selvaggio. We’ll take a leisurely stroll through a pine forest before settling down for a swim and delightful picnic.

Our journey concludes with a return to Gallipoli, comfortably cycling along the coastline.

Gallipoli and countryside bike tour - We arranged our bike trip with an outside travel agent and we were connected to Salento Bici Tour. Carlos was a terrific guide and very knowledgeable about the area. The ride was casual and relaxed (exactly what we were looking for!) we ended the ride at his parents farm for a delicious and fun cooking class. Can't wait to come back and ride for a week with this company.
