Batalha Monastery - Following his vow in 1385, King João I of Portugal pledged to erect a monastery in tribute to the Virgin Mary, contingent on his victory over the Castilian forces, which outnumbered his own. His triumph led to Portugal’s sovereignty from Spain, and he commissioned the construction of the Batalha Monastery for the Dominican order. The edifice took nearly two centuries to finalize.
