Highlights
  • Yaxhá-Nakum-Naranjo National Park - The adventure starts when we pick you up in Flores drive 1hr20min appox to El Sombrero Ecolodge where we will change to a 4x4 vehicle. We stop to buy entrance fees and then drive for 1hr30min approx to Nakum maya site. The drive is through forest trails and bajos which makes it exciting. We spend approximately 2hrs 30min visiting the main palaces and plazas before heading back to El Sombrero for lunch.
We leave El Sombrero towards Yaxha maya site at 2:30pm so we start the tour by walking around the abandoned plazas and palaces that are still partly hidden under vegetation. Most of the tour is under the canopy of the trees and under the watch of the Howler and Spider monkeys. We climb the Pyramid from the Mayor Astronomic Center and the North Acropolis to get the view of the endless forest over the horizon and finish off at the Temple of the Red Hands to wait for the Sun to go behind Lake Yaxha.
At 6:30pm we drive back to Flores which is the end of our trip.

Additional Information

Nakum is a Maya city nestled deep within the Peten’s jungles, boasting monumental structures, regal palaces, and temples perched atop other limestone platforms. These sites remain cloaked in vegetation and serve as a habitat for numerous animals. The journey towards Nakum involves some smooth sailing on paved roads until you reach Yaxha, where you switch to a 4x4 vehicle capable of navigating the challenging forest trails that become particularly muddy during the rainy period. These conditions contribute to making the trip more thrilling and adventurous. On our return journey, we take a detour to the Maya site of Yaxha, located by a lake. Here, we ascend structures like the Pyramid of Mayor Astronomic center and the Temple of the Red Hands, where we pause to witness the picturesque sunset over the lake and mountains. Around 6:30 p.m. we commence the one-and-a-half-hour drive back to Flores.

Outstanding guide - Reyas was the best part of the experience!! He is absolutely amazing. So kind and knowledgeable and generous. We really enjoyed his tour and I would hire his service again in a heartbeat!!! Yaxha was such a beautiful and quiet Mayan site… really enjoyed having the place to ourselves, essentially.
