Since the conflict in 1974, this resort has been deserted, affecting not only hotels but also stores, bars, and residential properties which remain vacant. Our guide will supply an exclusive map for ease of navigation and added details about significant structures. Recommended! - Thoroughly enjoyable open top bus tour. It was great to see the Cypriot landscape en route to Famagusta. The live commentary on the bus provided interesting facts on the journey. After crossing into the Occupied Zone (North Cyprus), the bus did a lap of the walled town, again with interesting commentary. A couple of hours on foot exploring the Old Town was enough in the heat. There are plenty of shopping opportunities whilst there. A further ten minute bus ride to the beach overlooking Voroshas' deserted holiday resort. Enough time there to enjoy a cold drink before returning on the bus to Pernera. We left at 10.00 am and returned by about 4.00 pm Altogether an enjoyable experience.

Very enjoyable day out, make sure you book to sit up top - A great tour, Paul is an entertaining & very jovial host, as was Clive the driver (a couple of Brits, everything is done in English). There are a few hotel pick ups you need to put up with and a short wait at the border both ways. Make sure you book a space up on the top (and wear a hat and suncream!), I didn’t see this as an option when we booked (via TripAdvisor) so initially we were placed downstairs. It doesn’t have a lot of ventilation, the fumes from the bus are unpleasant and the audio is hard to hear over the engine noise (old 1980’s bus). Luckily we were able to move upstairs part way through the journey there. Make sure you take passports for all your party, you’ll need them at the border. If you want to find out what happened in 1974 then best read up about it beforehand, the tour doesn’t go into much detail (they have another tour for that!). The town itself is at best “strange” but also fantastic to see how things have just rotted and been taken over by nature. Reminded me a lot of The Last of Us video game. Without the zombies… ;-) They’ve now opened up the beach and you can swim, the water is SO clear (we were there late October and the water was still 26C) and there are sun beds and umbrellas (all free). I can see why the “great and good” flocked there in the early 70’s, although the brutal ‘70s concrete buildings don’t create a very picturesque shoreline. We took the “left” fork to the beach (the right fork is much further walk) and there’s a “restaurant” serving chips, burgers etc. and public toilets that are free. You have to pay for everything by card, no cash. It’s pretty well priced. 2 (large) portions of chips and 2 Fanta was less than £5. All in all you have about 2 hours to wander around and are free to do so on your own, with a basic map pointing out some key buildings. You can hire bikes, e-scooters and golf buggies if you wish (at extra cost) but we enjoyed walking round, soaking up the atmosphere and imagining what it must have been like in its heyday. You’ll struggle to walk the whole place in 2 hours but on the return trip, the bus goes via the residential areas and you can see another view of the town. It’s odd seeing crumbling ruins on one side of the street and “normal” houses with people going about their business on the other side. Safe to say you’re not allowed to enter any of the ruins and the penalties for doing so are very harsh. There are plainclothes people wandering about/hanging out. It’s very clear where you can and can’t go. We all loved the day (with two boys aged 11 and 12) and got back about 3pm (we were collected at the Protaras Plaza, near Star Bucks). Great value for money and we just parked around the corner in the street for free, as we were in a villa. They seem to pick up from a lot of the hotels (or at least nearby), you have to select when you book and then they message with collection details via WhatsApp).

Brilliant Day out - Brilliant tour paul & mark the driver are lovely we visited the walled city of Famagusta where we had time to walk around and visit the ancient buildings then onto a beach in Varosha where you can see and take photos of the deserted hotels along the coast line. Your given a bit of time to sun bath or have a swim. Going up to Famagusta your taken through Turkish checkpoint Passport is needed for this trip and they keep it until your return. It is Turkish Lira currency but they will work it out in Euro for you. Great day out highly recommend

Day trip with Friends - The views were amazing, the talk from the operator was informative! We did know some of the modern day history but not the older information, found that interesting! Seating is a little tight therefore not suitable on a very hot day. Book the top seats for a refreshing breeze! Very easy to book this trip and staff very knowledgeable and understanding , thanks 😊

The Great Varosha Experience - A very nice excursion the the ghost town. Very informative and fun, though I was hoping for a bit more.. First of all they sit you on a bus, that normally would do “hop on hop off”-style, understandable to why you cannot do this, when you go over to the occupied side of Cyprus. They then start to tell you, what you can and cannot do, which is okay, but they don’t give you any “guided” information until you get closer to the border. When you reach Varosha, they send you away with a map to explore the area for 2 hours. Here I was expecting to have a bit more of a proper guide, yes, I can read on the map, but most of the time, I just see completely abandoned buildings, and being the typical tourist I take the photos, but I have no clue of its history and background. The tour guides would walk around and would tell you a little bit about the area, when you saw them, but that’s it, and did not see them very much for the 2 hours we were there. Though the guys were absolutely brilliant, they were in their A-Game, and they would entertain quite a lot on the bus. Would absolutely do the excursion again, and definitely recommend it!
