In 1453, King James II seized the castle following a disagreement with Crichton, and since then, it has remained under royal ownership.

In 1650, Oliver Cromwell captured the castle during his Scottish campaign.

The castle functioned as a state prison, detaining figures such as Cardinal Beaton and the 6th Earl of Angus.

Blackness Castle has been featured in several films:

  • Outlander, where it was depicted as Fort William, the location of Jamie’s whipping by Black Jack Randall.
  • Outlaw King, with Chris Pine portraying Robert the Bruce.

Additional Information

Explore the realm of Outlander through our exclusive film location tour.

Our private tours accommodate up to four guests and take you to four distinct Outlander filming destinations in Scotland.

Lallybroch, the family home of the character Jamie Fraser, was filmed at the 15th-century stronghold, Midhope Castle.

The exterior scenes were captured at Midhope Castle, located near South Queensferry. Founded in the 15th Century by John Martyne, the lord of Medhope, the castle was refurbished in the middle of the 1600s and has retained most of its original charm. Visitors are requested to observe Midhope from afar as the interior is largely in ruins.

Doune Castle, constructed in 1400, serves as the backdrop for Castle Leoch in the show Outlander.

Drummond Castle and Gardens, with roots tracing back to 1630, is deemed “the finest example of formal terraced gardens in Scotland”. The castle doubled as the Palace of Versailles in an Outlander episode.
Blackness Castle was portrayed as Fort William, the place where the character Jamie was flogged by Black Jack Randall.
