Myra, an ancient Lycian city renowned as a pilgrimage site, is now known as Demre, a place famed for Saint Nicholas. In Myra, he ascended from a humble priest to a bishop, enacting numerous acts of kindness. Legend holds that Saint Nicholas would toss little pouches of gold coins into the chimneys of impoverished girls’ households.
