Highlights
  • Hue Imperial City (The Citadel) - Located on the northern bank of Huong River, the former capital of Vietnam is an area which is over 500ha, including the Royal and the Forbidden City. Hue citadel was the administrative and political center of Nguyen Dynasty
  • Thai Hoa Palace - Thai Hoa palace is among the most important constructions of Hue Imperial City where Nguyen kings had ruled the country for over 100 years.
  • The Noon Gate (Cua Ngo Mon) - As an important part of the Hue Imperial Citadel, which was recognized by UNESCO as a World’s Heritage Site in 1993, Noon Gate is a huge U-shaped construction consisting of a brick and stone foundation and a wooden pavilion with terracotta tiles.
  • The Mieu Temple - Built in 1821 by Emperor Minh Mang to worship 10 Emperors from the Nguyen Dynasty.
  • Thien Mu Pagoda - This is the oldest pagoda and also the symbol of Hue city. Right in front of Thien Mu pagoda, you will find Phuoc Duyen tower - 21m tall and has 7 floors, each floor is there a Statue of Buddha . Inside the tower, there is a spiral staircase leading up to the top floor, where a golden Statue of Buddha used to be there.
  • Tomb of Khai Dinh - Located on Chau Chu mountain. Khai Dinh Tomb is special with strange architecture, unlike the tombs of the previous kings. It is a mixture of many different cultures. At the first glance, Khai Dinh tomb is like a castle in Europe, because it was built on a concrete slope. Indigenous materials such as wood, stone, brick and lime here are just a negligible amount, overwhelming by the modern materials.

Making friends across the nations - Hue Imperial City is a very beautiful place to visit, with its rich historical values. Under the guidance of Mr Phuoc, he has been so nice and patient esp with us elderly tourists delaying the tour, he always makes sure we are on track and comfortable. Among all, in the near future, I would love to choose Vietnam as my next destination again...

Could be better - While I think a trip to Hue is certainly worthwhile, and communication with the tour company for coordinating the tour was good, this particular tour suffered because of the guide we had. He should not have been a guide for English speaking tourists. He didn’t have just a thick accent, he just flat out said the wrong words (or mispronounced them so that the English words were unrecognizable). We ended up googling a lot of the sites and learned that the “fee-muh” river was the “perfume” river. He repeated a lot of the same information over and over while we standing out in a downpour getting more and more wet. And he told us after lunch we were going to visit a tomb and then the citadel. But we went to the citadel and I kept thinking we had one more stop after that. He couldn’t even convey the schedule for the day. We would have been better off with just a driver. Our driver was good. He got us safely to the sites and back to the hotel despite the bad weather. The van was a somewhat older van, but seemed well maintained. It seems there was no heater in the van so we all froze in our wet clothes for 3hrs on the ride back to Da Nang. I guess they don’t make vans with heaters here because it is so rarely needed? Food at the restaurant was pretty good. They offered vegetarian option family style. Because I was the only vegetarian in my family, I sat at the vegetarian table and not with my family. The coordinator of the tour was receptive to feedback so hopefully they are taking steps to improve this tour.
