  • Rajamalai (Eravikulam) National Park - The most sought after destination in Munnar is the Eravikulam National Park, the first of its kind in Kerala, where the endangered Nilgiri Thar is protected. Spread over 97 sq. km., this park holds the largest viable population of Tahr, several other species of rare animals, birds and butterflies. The park offers a magnificent view of the tea plantations and also of the rolling hills caressed by blankets of mist. The park becomes a hot destination when the hill slopes get covered in a carpet of blue, resulting from the flowering of Neelakurinji. Fantastic tour through tea fields, waterfalls and lakes - Thank you to Mani for an excellent day exploring the tea fields around Munnar, as well as waterfalls and lakes. We weren’t so lucky with the elephants in the evening, but had an amazing time nonetheless!

Wild animals, waterfalls and a small sugar cane factory - The drive with Mani (our driver) from our apartment first went past the huge tea plantations and beautiful purple flowering trees. Wherever we would have looked by, he would immediately spot the wild animals: the bison that crossed the road behind our car, the deer in the reserve, the monkeys (after we told him that there are no monkeys in our area and therefore they are... are special to us). When we arrived at the reserve, we booked the Thoovanam Waterfalls tour (you pay directly there) and walked the one-hour walk (one way) to the waterfalls. Elephants probably come there to drink, but unfortunately not at the time we were there (around 1:00 p.m.). It was very hot, but Mani had prepared plenty of water bottles for us. It is pleasant to sit in the shade by the waterfalls and listen to the sounds of nature. We also saw various monkeys and giant squirrels along the way. Finally, we visited a small sugar cane factory where the individual steps of production were shown. When asked, Mani explains everything you want to know and makes suggestions about what is worth seeing in a very pleasantly reserved manner. This way you don't feel pressured to do anything and can enjoy the tour according to your interests. We had fun!

Trek in Chinnar - Great experience wandering with the rangers in Chinnar Park. We took the 3hr trek and it was definitely worth it : observation tower, looking for the wild elephants, deers and buffalos!

Not so great experience - The iterinary mentioned has a lot of differences with the original. Bamboo and Sandalwood gardens has to be seen from the road side. Muniyara park and caves are not covered. At last chinnar wildlife sanctuary trekking also missed being not reached the place in time. No proper planning. A private Jeep can be hired with much lower cost around RS.2000/- per 5 to 6 people. Eravikulam National Park and Lakkam falls are only good places we have seen. Miserable experience...
