Highlights
  • Complejo Arqueologico Chinchero - Chinchero is a small Andean Indian village located high up on the windswept plains of Anta at 3765m about 30km from Cusco. There are beautiful views overlooking the Sacred Valley of the Incas, with the Cordillera Vilcabamba and the snow-capped peak of Salkantay dominating the western horizon. Chinchero is believed to be the mythical birthplace of the rainbow. Its major claim to tourism is its colourful Sunday market which is much less tourist-orientated than the market at Pisac. The village mainly comprises mud brick (adobe) houses, and locals still go about their business in traditional dress. The village may have been an important town in Inca times. The most striking remnant of this period is the massive stone wall in the main plaza which has ten trapezoidal niches. The construction of the wall and many other ruins and agricultural terraces (which are still in use) are attributed to Inca Tupac Yupanqui who possibly used Chinchero as a kind of country resort.

Additional Information

The Sacred Valley, located in the Andean Highlands of Peru, was at the core of the Inca Empire, along with the adjacent town of Cusco and the historical city of Machu Picchu. Covering a distance of approximately 60 kilometers, this region comprises productive farmlands and Spanish colonial towns such as Pisac and Ollantaytambo. Pisac is famed for its handicraft market, held every Sunday, and its Incan fortress situated on a hilltop.

Nice day trip! - This was a really fun day trip to grasp the Andean culture and understand more of the Incan empire. It is fast paced and a lot of driving but our guide, Juan Carlos, did an excellent job explaining everything in English and Spanish. Note: these are larger groups and to make it on time you have to stick together or you lose time at each location. There were three women in our group who were always late to the bus giving us less time everywhere else. If you book, be considerate of others on the tour.

Must do Cusco tour - Wow- what an interesting and diverse day! It’s a long day - about 12 hours but you see so many different and culturally significant sites. Jonathan, our guide, was informed, an excellent communicator, enthusiastic and ensured all our questions were answered. The lunch stop was excellent. Highly recommend this tour.

Sacred Valley is great but this tour is rushed - Recommended but know what you are signing up for. This is a rushed tour of the Sacred Valley and its sites. They are each spectacular and you will glad to have visited each, to be sure. Guide is perfectly bilingual, which is a big plus. The sites are stunning but you will be rushed ... this is the Reader's Digest tour. Our stop at the alpaca processing business was interesting and worthwhile. The other stops where they plugged in commercialism were utter wastes of time (other than the bathroom availability): salt shop, drink presentation on bus (not her fault, the bus is so loud that she could not be heard) and, most of all, the jewelry stop at the end of a very long day ... beg them to skip it. Ollantaytambo is especially great. The amount of time spent there was also in line with its magnitude. Your guide will be knowledgeable and an excellent companion. But where the tempo comes from is an unknown. They need to slow it down. This would have been 4* but the bus ... well driven by Frank ... but so noisy and distracting that it was beyond ridiculous. Perhaps a roll of duct tape can be used to piece it back together before the next long journey?

So many mishaps on this poorly organized tour - This was the worst tour I've ever been on. In spite of the ad saying it's 15 people max, a family of 17 people (13 children + 4 adults) got on the bus with me and 3 other tourists. When the guide probably could tell that we were not pleased with a bus full of children ages 4-14, he made a phone call and pawned us off on another tour guide who didn't even work for the company I booked with. There was no explanation, other than, "You four will get out now; that's your new guide." Throughout the day, the second guide & driver left customers behind at not just one, but TWO different locations. You'd think they would start to do a headcount after they left the first people behind, but that didn't happen. The only reason we turned back for the customers was because other tourists on the bus noticed they were missing. Then the driver had to change the tire--not because of a puncture, which would be understandable--but because they were so bald that the tread started to peel off. (I looked at the tires; they were old.) These crazy mishaps made us late for Pisac, and we didn't have much time there. But the guide still made time to bring us to the silver store afterward, where we were upsold on souvenirs, rather than seeing the sites we were there for. The whole thing was an utter mess, and all of us kept shaking our heads at how poorly organized the tour was.
