Highlights
  • Celje Castle - The Castles are a reflection of an era, however the people in different periods accepted and perceived them quite differently, just like life is getting new forms all the time.

Castles and manors have, with their extraordinary past and present, always teased human imagination. Various stories interwove about the castles, above all about their inhabitants, which were later changed by the people and have been told to their descendants to this day. And due to all those stories and legends about the castles and their inhabitants that were kept by the folk tradition, we can still (magically) relive the past of the mostly castle ruins, that still daringly and proudly stand on the clifs and remind us of their former glory.

Thus a lot of stories and legends about the Old Castle Celje, The Lower Castle, the Counts and the Princes of Celje and people from Teharje, were told.

The stories and legends edited by Janko Orožen: Castles and Manors according to folk tradition and the documentary film Veronika and Friderik.

Additional Information

Slovenia’s Savinja river basin houses the most extensive collection of castles and manors compared to any other region in the country. This is a result of several historical factors. Initially, this area served as the heart of the Savinja margraviate until 1140. It became prosperous as the Carinthia Krško bishops accrued a significant amount of property. Moreover, this region was a favoured settlement area for various noble families, most notably, the influential counts and princes of Celje.

Satisfying - Very beautiful castle, well maintained with a satisfying view of Celje from above, inside there is a bar where you can eat with a discount of €1 from the price of the entrance ticket

A castle in the sky - An amazing castle with signs translated into virtually faultless English too. A very friendly welcome from the reception too. Would heartily recommend the castle to anyone visiting Slovenia. We are looking forward to going back perhaps to the medieval festival

Beautiful from the outside (there is little or nothing inside) - Reachable on foot or by car (rather steep uphill road). Perfect location, spectacular views - especially from the highest tower. Inside, in the rooms, however, there is little or nothing. There is also little information on the history of the castle; an introductory video would have been very welcome. However, the old Celje Castle remains worth visiting.

A must see in Celje - Really worth visiting, the ticked for 10 EUR included gallery in the city not far from parking and also old mansion in the city. The castle has amazing views and is well kept, restored in a very nice way. A must see in Celje.

We really like it - We visited It during a rainy and foggy day that made It very suggestive. It's an Amazing Place and we would like to return here during the Summer to admire the Valley view.

A real discovery - A real discovery. Fortress and ruins of the former castle of Celje. Mysterious and somewhat morbid life of nobles who lived in northern Croatia in addition to Slovenia. The Museum of Horror fits perfectly into the area. Nice piece of history.

Beautiful castle, less expensive ticket office... - The castle is in a wonderful position, dominates the town and has fascinating stories. Its structure is also fascinating. Internally there is a bar and events are often organised. In the main tower there is an interesting permanent exhibition on torture. The only flaw was the staff at the entrance who "ripped us off" by selling us more expensive tickets than they should have thought they were lying about the ages of our children. Ask for documents and avoid certain reprehensible scenes.

Nice view of Celje - Very cool castle and a nice view. Not too much at the top other than a few info boards. There is a lot more info in the regional museum. The hike up is very steep. Worth going to but you don’t need more than 1hr.

Worth the time - We stopped by the castle enroute from Ljubljana to Graz. The rain abbreviated our visit and detracted from the views over the river and valley but was still worth the time. The torture chamber exhibits were chilling and a reminder of how cruel humans can be.
