Oslob Cebu - I have been here for 4x already. But first time with my son and 2nd with my husband. The land travel is quite long after you landed from the plane. Decided to check in our hotel that we always do. Tour is available in the reception and they will schedule it. Tour is quite early for the whale sharks are early. and the line is very long for the tourist are also early.

Oslob adventure - Being in the water is only part of the adventure. Up at 3am, drive for 2.5 to 3 hours over a winding potholed under construction road in the dark. Very commercial venture, expect to share your day with about 300 other people. Not a quality experience in that reguard. Wait in a long line and be hurded along to info-gathering desk, I'd check desk and to ticket booth (500)p. Get a life jacket, get into outrigger, go out about 300 yards, anchor, jump in water for whales to appear. They do so as they are being fed handfuls of krill. You get within a few feet of these VERY large animals. About 30 minutes. You can get the essence of the swimming part on some excellent utube shots. Not something you do a second time but I would caution my friends to not venture to Cebu just for this.

UNETHICAL, avoid at all costs! - Please don’t do this tour! It’s completely unethical. We did a group trip on this tour, regrettably without having properly done our research (so it’s absolutely our own fault). We had a brief look online about which tours were ethical and this one was suggested - so we should have looked into it more. The trip started at about 4am, when we were collected from our hotel in Cebu City. We were driven 2.5 hours to Oslob where we had to wait about 6 hours before it was our turn to go into the water. There are thousands of tourists (not even a remote exaggeration) waiting to go on row boats and get into the sea with the whale sharks - that’s why the wait is so long. People get called up in groups of about 15 people a time and there are about 20-25 boats each carrying that number of people. There are several workers on smaller boats, rowing up and down the sea throwing feed into the water to ensure the whale sharks stay in view. Whilst the animals are absolutely beautiful and fascinating, it’s totally unethical. I really wish I had done more research as this was a complete tourist trap. The animals shouldn’t be treated like this. Part of our trip then took us to Moal Boal where there were sea turtles swimming in the shallow water and a sardine run in the deeper waters. Whilst the turtles were not being fed to keep them in the shallow, there was a small group of tourist along with our group of three people who were getting far too excited and kept swimming over the turtles and not leaving them alone. None of the guides told them to calm down or back away. I would not want to have this experience again.

Profitable mass tourism and captivity - Avoid at all costs! Classic mass tourism that specifically makes a profit at the expense of the animals. Of course, I cannot evaluate the treatment of the animals in more detail, but the fact that they can only move within their fenced-in area is enough to make me realize that this cannot be considered species-appropriate keeping. Furthermore, the rush is so great that a waiting time of 3 to 4 hours can already be expected at 6:00 a.m. We paid for the activity in advance, but ultimately didn't go on the boat.

Don’t go - awful experience! - Awful experience - chaotic and unnatural Too many people in the water. Many are not following instructions. And no one is there to make sure the gentle giants are not touches. Such a sad and highly commercialized experience. Don’t do it. Go to Donsol instead. Much more authentic.

Unethical and AVOID! - I am normally a stickler for researching things, however having just gone through a hectic personal period in my life , when it came to booking tours for our trip I drastically dropped the ball. I am actually quite disgusted with myself for paying into this endeavour. The Oslob whale shark snorkel should not be allowed to continue. The fisherman have lured these animals with shrimp (not even their proper diet), they then herd them along a train of approx 15 to 20 boats with 10 people on each. People are then getting far too close to them, touching and some even attempting to ride them. We also witnessed an episode where one whale shark attempted to swim out of its lane and the fisherman herded it back. There should be a call to the government to stop this immediately!!

Spent 10 hours got nothing - It was the main reason why we came to Moalboal. We woke up at 3 am to get to Oslob by 6 am, and we got number 306 in line. After waiting for 7 (!) hours, our guide said that there was no more time, because the weather was windy, and all tickets after number 240 has been canceled. Just like that. So we had to come back with nothing. They ruined our day and our vacation so easily. This kind of poor management is so frustrating!
