Additional Information

Robben Island is famously known as the location where numerous South African political detainees, including Nelson Mandela, were imprisoned. It served as a regular anchorage for transiting ships during the 16th and 17th centuries. The island also functioned as a leper asylum from 1846 until 1931, and those deemed mentally ill were confined there as well.

From the mid-1960s until 1991, Robben Island operated as South Africa’s high-security prison, predominantly for political prisoners, with Nelson Mandela among its most notable inmates. It was acknowledged as a World Heritage site in 1999.

The excursion continues to the Spice Route, a highly favored winery known for an array of activities. Visitors can enjoy sampling wines, artisanal beers, gelato, chocolates, gin, as well as savoring exquisite cuisine.

Next, we explore the prize-winning Babylonstoren vineyard, offering more than just wine sampling. The estate boasts a vast 35-hectare orchard and vegetable patch, a Botanical Spa, and various exclusive experiences, including the Spice Garden, an authentic Italian Bakery, a Healing Garden with Tea Ceremony.

Additionally, a Greenhouse Restaurant and a Juicery are available for patrons.

Crafty Beer Binge at Spice Route - This was a great experience of note. Robben Island was good hut the best part was the wineries. Petched on the foot of the Paarl rock we had an amazing time at Spice Route. We were surprised at the setting and the services they offer including craft beer. What was supposed to be a wine tasting tour ended up being a beer drinking binge..courtesy of Raw Tours. We also had braai which you don't get in many restaurants. Great stuff Raw keep it up.

Blissful Day - Travelling has never been better. It was such a wonderful experience to tour with Raw Tours and crew. The guides knew exactly how to make their clients feel relaxed while simultaneously feeling immense bliss. The trip to Robern Island was most enjoyable and I attribute this mostly to the guide's knowledge about the history of the place. The in between travelling from one site to another was amazingly fascinating as we drove and passed some beautiful places with a rich story telling history.
