There may be no better way to unwind than with a visit to one of Wine Country’s spas and hot springs. Heated by geothermal energy, deposits of underground water spring up through cracks and fissures in the Earth’s crust, creating natural hot springs along the valley floor. Spas and resorts in Calistoga, Boyes Hot Springs, and the surrounding areas draw these natural waters into pools varying in size and temperature. Let your cares drift away as you float in pools as warm as bathtubs. Get some skin therapy in a tub of nutrient-rich volcanic ash with a classic Wine Country mud bath. Leave the rub of city life behind with an aromatherapy massage or salt scrub. Better yet, do all three.

Calistoga was developed as a swell, tourist-oriented getaway. In 1859 maverick entrepreneur Sam Brannan snapped up 2,000 acres of prime property and laid out a resort, intending to use the area's natural hot springs as the main attraction.
