Additional Information

Join us on a journey to the oldest continuously functioning Thermal Hospital in the globe, with a history spanning over half a millennium.

Long before the concept of SPAs was introduced, Portuguese Queen D. Leonor possessed her personal ‘Pool’, which you’ll have the opportunity to visit. She devised this idea after witnessing people bathing in naturally heated springs in a quest to alleviate their ailments. Struck by the sight, the Queen commissioned a thermal hospital to be constructed at that exact location the subsequent year (in 1485).

This excursion also involves a visit to the local Church of Nossa Senhora do Pópulo, colloquially known as ‘Our Lady of the People’. Despite its modest size, the church boasts rich artistic grandeur and houses some of the initial exemplars of the ‘Manueline Architecture’, an architectural style intrinsic to Portugal.

To conclude, you’ll be led to the visually stunning and passionately designed D. Carlos I Park. Here, you’ll learn about the city’s past, with a special focus on its prosperous period in the 19th century. Discover how the city evolved into a nucleus of industry and art, where accomplished artists like Rafael Bordalo Pinheiro and José Malhoa made their mark.

Great Silver Coast tour - We had a great experience with Ivo and JP. They tailored the tour to our preferences and took us to Alcobaça, Caldas da Rainha, and Óbidos. They were both very knowledgeable and did an excellent job explaining the history of the region to us. We had a lot of fun!

Friendly local guide - excellent knowledge & English! - A small group of us enjoyed a private tour of Caldas da Rainha with Ivo Soares of Silver Coast Traveling. He took us around the town explaining the history and pointing out lots of details that we would have missed on our own. It was a very interesting tour but not too long either. I would highly recommend!

Beyond expectations - It was so much more than we were expecting. Ivo, has an extensive knowledge of the city, and it’s history, as a result of years of studying and learning. And the way he presents it is very clear and engaging. Nothing is hidden. He definitely goes beyond what one could expect. If you are in the area and you want to learn, Ivo and his team, are a sure bet. We will definitely repeat the experience.

Caldas Unseen your - Excellent tour with a really good and knowledgable guide . Good pace and really nice to reflect on the politics and the history of Portugal and the role Caldas played as well as seeing the importance of the thermal baths to the area. Loved the visit to the cafe that started the carnation revolution discussions and also the exquisite church alongside the baths which was so beautiful . Also enjoyed the history of tiles relevant to the area . Would recommend this to anyone
