On our Barbados and reclaimed land tour we meet outside the Bridgetown Port. The Bridgetown Port and Pelican Island were once separated by water. The island was joined to the deep-water harbor in the 1950s and added just over 90 acres of land to the island. It was used as an intermit site during World War 1 and 2 and once as a site to house for people with infectious diseases.
We visit Pelican Village that was once part of the Island, here we can stroll onto Fontanelle Road, and see how far the Pelican Island extended, learn about the historic Fontabelle area, Kensington Oval, our mecca cricket Stadium, the Indian River, the indigenous site where the Arawak Indians lived, what the Indian River was transformed to, and a visit to Rihanna Drive.
