- Berat Castle - Embark on a guided exploration of Berat Castle, a prominent fortress in the Balkans, renowned for its continuous habitation since the 4th century BC. Today, it remains a living community. Our journey includes a visit to the largest church within the castle’s district, the Church of the Dormition of St Mary (Kisha Fjetja e Shën Mërisë), home to the Onufri Museum. We’ll also explore St Theodore’s church near the entrance, the impressive Church of the Holy Trinity situated beneath the upper fortifications, and the quaint chapels of St Mary Blachernae and St Nicholas, some of which were established in the 13th century. Look out for the Red Mosque along the southern fortress walls, a historic site dating back to the 15th century and the first mosque in Berat. Great guide to an interesting City - I did the Castle City Berat Day tour with Saimir. Saimir is an excellent guide. and he really knows his cultural, religious and human history of the area and loves Berat. It was fun doing the tour with him and he spent a full 3 hours giving information and pointing out points of interest until after dark!
The only problem is the company owner or office staff person (not sure which) did not want to do a tour with a solo person or even a couple who walked in to ask for a tour the next day. But when we said the 3 of us would join up they immediately called Saimir to do a tour in 15 minutes so it was a bit rushed to go back to hotel and get proper shoes. Wear tennis shoes its a lot of walking on uneven streets and steps.
