Additional Information

Following the Bolshevik uprising, a massive population exodus of 1 to 2 million individuals out of Russia during the subsequent three years was seen. Of these, an estimated one hundred thousand relocated to the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes. For this small nation, the overwhelming entry of these refugees had substantial implications. Among other things, the capital, Belgrade, was significantly influenced by this Russian emigration. Was the impact positive or negative, though? We ought to venture around, observe, and conclude for ourselves.

Why did this group of Russian emigrants choose this location primarily? What does the term Nansen passports mean and why is it being brought up in discussions today? In a daring move, how was it that Serbia, unlike stronger nations, risked providing shelter to another nation’s fully trained and partly armed military force? Let’s uncover these mysteries! And while we’re at it, let’s ponder over a tricky question - how could one manage such an exiled military entity without leading to:

  • a potential overthrow,
  • territorial acquisition,
  • or famine.

This complex historical question adds to the exquisite charm of this nation! Why not join us on this journey of discovery!

The best walking tour in Belgrade - We went on a tour with my family and it was one of the best walking city tours I've ever taken! We literally saw Belgrade through the eyes of white emigrants at the beginning of the 20th century, and learned what exactly they left as a legacy to the city. At the same time, the entire story of emigration was told in the context of the complex history of Serbia itself and those specific places where we visited, and, of course, in the context of the present. I highly recommend it if you want to learn more about Belgrade, its architecture and history, and find everywhere traces of emigration a hundred years ago.
