Highlights

Drive to Machame Gate, Hike to Machame Camp

Machame - Elevation: 1830m To 3050m | Distance: 11km/7mi | Hiking Time: 5-6 Hours

Drive from Moshi to the Mount Kilimanjaro National Park Gate takes about 45 minutes. The journey passes through the village of Machame which is located on the lower slopes of the mountain. We depart the park gate and walk through the rain forest on a winding trail up a ridge. At lower elevations, the trail can be muddy and slippery. Gaiters and trekking poles are a good idea here. We continue a short distance until we reach the Machame Camp.

Additional Information

The Machame route, often referred to as the “Whiskey” path, has become the most favored trail on the mountain. It offers more challenge than the Marangu course, with extended daily treks and steeper slopes. Recognized as a demanding path, it is more fitting for thrill-seekers and individuals with prior hiking or backpacking know-how. This route commences from the south, then veers eastwards, passing beneath Kilimanjaro’s southern ice cap before reaching the apex. A minimum of six-day commitment is necessary for this route, though a seventh day is advised. The Machame route provides stunning and varied scenery. However, the charm is somewhat diminished due to considerable crowd numbers.

Location

Top of Africa with the best entourage !! - The whole experience was just amazing , a challenge of a life time and we had the best entourage to help us realise our dream of reaching the top. From the guides (Alan and Shefii) to the chef (J4) who made amazing food despite the weather conditions and the amazing porters especially (Paschal) who was just a gem, the most humble human you can come across and waited on us 5 star style . They all really took good care of us and helped us down after we summited when we had no energy to walk back down. There are no words to explain the whole experience ..it was simply an experience of a life time and one to never ever forget. We are so glad to have used this company and Wence’s team were just incredible. If you want an amazing experience from the moment they collect you from the airport to the moment they drop you back …this is the company for you. Can’t fault them and we are so grateful to have used them. Thank you so so much !!

Balaji solo hiker in machame route - I didn't know the Intrepid Explorer and its owner Mr. Wenceslaus Tarimo. He was referred to me by my friend and i initiated the plan. Mr.Tarimo was always available on phone calls/messages to give full guidance about the trip, as i had known very little about it. He was polite and full of cooperation during the phone calls and also helped me in booking my local flight tickets and also in obtaining a Tanazania visa, I went as solo hiker in machame route, Mr.Tarimo arrange everything perfectly for my hike (The Guide, porters and tent) which helped me to summit Mt Kilimanjaro within 6 days and also arrange my other trip to hot water spring and arusha national park. Climb Kilimanjaro with Intrepid Explorer Tanzania - To be honest, i haven't known the Intrepid and its owner Wenceslaus Tarimo. He was referred to me by a common friend of a friend through whom i initiated the plan. W.Tarimo was always available on phone calls/messages to give full guidance about the trip, as i had known very little about it. He was polite and full of cooperation during the phone calls and also during pre-hike. He helped me in booking my local flight tickets and also in obtaining a Tanazania visa. What else can i ask from a person whom i haven't met before??? This is customer service at its best. I was a solo-hiker by the way. Now his team... they are awesome! They care! Every moment i meet a member of the team during the hike, they always check on me, my comfort etc which gave me more confidence. The two guides he had allotted for me Nuru & Allan are the best i should say. They are masters in their field. When it comes to mountains, they play it with ease...they know the terrain at the back of their hand (of course they have to) but this level of expertise is simply superb. The morale booster was on the sumit day, when both the guides ensure i touch the top of the mountain with ease is truly unforgettable. Kudos to them! The support staff team (porters & chef) are equally strong pillars of the business. They are very kind. After reaching every next campsite, either of the team members would walk again to us to help by carrying our bags, providing drinking water was such a great gesture to see. The hotel i was put up (Keys Hotel) is a decent place where you can see lot of tourists coming. In a nutshell, i thoroughly enjoyed the trek. I am looking forward to another time touching the sumit through a different route but with the same team Intrepid! Welldone Intrepid!!!
