Additional Information

Explore the intriguing past of Browns Island situated near Auckland. Early settlers used to swim their horses across the harbor, while hundreds of years back, Māori prospered through agriculture and fishing, leaving behind the pieces of ancient pā sites. Even more fascinating, traces of the Sydney mud cockle were discovered in volcanic shell beds.

In 1909, the country’s aviation legacy began when Alex and Claude Barnard sent off a homemade aircraft from the top of the island, signifying New Zealand’s first airplane experiments.

Browns Island is a volcanic cone created from an eruption that occurred 25,000 years ago, being a part of the active Auckland Volcanic Field. Now uninhabited, it serves as a leisure reserve and a wildlife sanctuary, housing indigenous birds like tūī, pūkeko, silvereye, along with unique animals like skinks and geckos.

As a hub for educational pursuits in volcanology, geology, and environmental preservation, Browns Island is the perfect site for field studies for students and scientists.
