In 1995, Hutovo blato was designated as a nature park due to its exceptional beauty and importance. The karst water that descends from the hills forms numerous lakes, gorges, and the river Krupa, sustaining a high groundwater level in the valleys. This abundance of underground water leads to the formation of permanent and semi-permanent springs and wells. Hutovo blato’s lakes are known as crypto depressions since some of their bases are positioned below sea level (like Jelim at 18m). Its largest lakes include Deransko, Jelim, Drijen, Orah, Škrka, and Svitava. Svitava is an artificial lake created during the construction of the Čapljina hydropower plant. A vast network of canals and gorges links all the lakes in Hutovo blato.
