Kumana National Park is the eastern sector of Yala National Park. One of the most significant features of the Kumana National Park is the ‘Kumana Villu’ - a 200 hectare natural swamp lake, fed by the ‘Kumbukkan Oya’ through a half mile long narrow channel. It is at this mangrove swamp that many water birds’ nest in May and June. Regular sightings include such species of bird as pelicans, painted storks, spoonbills, white ibis, herons, egrets and little cormorants.

Located at the south-east edge of Sri Lanka lies the 18,149-hectare Kumana National Park, a haven for eco-tourists and bird lovers. High volumes of bird species find their home, breeding and settling in this sanctuary. Kumana National Park is positioned in the eastern region of Yala National Park. One of the park’s unique features is the Kumana Villu, a natural swamp lake stretching 200 hectares and replenished by the Kumukkan Oya via a half-mile long channel. During May and June, numerous waterfowl choose this mangrove swamp as their nesting ground. Visitors can also expect to spot species of spoonbills, white ibis, and pelicans and more spoonbills in this area.
