Highlights
  • Wray Castle - Your first stop is at Wray Castle and takes you back in time to when Beatrix Potter was a teenager on holiday in 1882. The usual holiday home, rented for the summer in Scotland, was unavailable and so Beatrix persuaded her parents to take Wray Castle on the shores of Lake Windermere for the summer. It was here that Beatrix spent her 16th birthday, met Canon Hardwicke Drummond Rawnsley, one of the three founding members of The National Trust, and started her lifelong love of the area. This was where it all began for her. Your guide will explain the significance of Wray Castle in Beatrix’s life and the people that she met there.

A peak experience! - We had a terrific day out with Tim as our guide. We already admired Beatrix Potter, but our understanding and appreciation of her deepened with Tim’s help. Our travel route seemed designed to reveal awe-inspiring landscapes around every bend. Tim was an extremely congenial companion. The breadth and depth of his knowledge meant we ended the day not only with a better understanding of Beatrix Potter, but of Cumbria and England. The tour is definitely a highlight of our time in the Lakes.

Brilliant Beatrix - Such a packed and full day tour with amazing views and places to visit. Sandra our driver and Gillian our guide were so knowledgeable of the area and with a wealth of information. Gillian's passion for Beatrix Potter showed in her excellent delivery and enthusiasm of her knowledge. Timings were perfect and we had enough time for toilet breaks, photo opportunities , gifts and lunch. A definite must and I would use this company again, Thank you for a lovely day :-)

Breathtaking views, full of facts and such a fantastic day. A must if you in the Lakes! - What a fantastic tour. We love Beatrix Potter and it was so lovely to see so many great places. Tim, our guide, was brilliant. So fun and lovely to chat to. He was incredibly knowledgeable and loved the enthusiasm. He taught us so much and we now know all the other things that made Beatrix so great apart from the books . Lots of stops and plenty of time at each. Never felt rushed. The views we saw and photo opportunities we had too were great. Also so nice that Tim refers to books and knows where pictures are..makes it more real. Loved we learnt about Wordsworth a bit too. Never done a tour before but definitely going to do another next time we are here in the Lakes. A big mention also has to go to Tim's excellent driving. No idea how he managed it all! A brilliant day and lovely having a small group- only us and one other couple. Thank you Tim,,you were fab and English Lake Tours. You will see us again!

Beatrix Potter tour - We were met at the Windermere train station precisely on time. Appropriate well-maintained van. Our driver/guide was Tim who did an exceptional job -- most knowledgeable, fun to be with. Good driver. Tour sequenced well and was run at a relaxed pace. Obviously, he enjoyed the subject and we had a running commentary that was informative and answered our many questions. The two of us plus two others made for a good group. We all ended the day not only enjoying the area but had a much greater understanding of Beatrix Potter and her many contributions to children's literature as well as the Lake District.
