Miss it already! - Just finished our 7 day tour with Sumatra Orangutans Treks last week and miss it already! The highlights were walking with the elephants, seeing the orangutans, going down the river on the rapids and learning more about the culture and history of Samosir. Food and accomodation provided were great. We especially enjoyed the villa in the middle of the rice fields, very peaceful indeed. Overall, we had such an amazing time. Helmi, Anto, Dennis and our driver were amazing. Such a good team 💪🏻👏 they went above and beyond to ensure we had a great time, always safe and entertained with games and knowledgeable facts. (Be sure to ask for Dennis if going to Lake Toba, his connection to the island is certainly special) We appreciate all of their hard work and would 💯 ask for them all again by name for future trips. Look no further and book Sumatra Orangutans Treks! - Keely Fearnside Our time with the staff and activities provided by Sumatra Orangutan Treks was awesome. With a need to rebook due to Covid last year we experienced total support from the Management. Our time with the very kind, caring, helpful, experienced and knowledgeable Guides was 10 out of 10. Special thanks to our allocated guides: Dennis,Helmi and Anto and our safe driver who took us from place to place on our seven day adventure. Food and accommodation was great. Our Orangutan Trek was exciting, fulfilling and challenging. We come away with great memories and photos. Many thanks to Sumatra Orangutan Treks. - Steve and Ros Fearnside (Australia)

Once in a lifetime experience - I found this company on trip advisor and decided to book my tour with this company. It is important to us that we have ethical animal encounters and prefer companies that offer eco tourism and support local communities all of which this company does. I contacted Hari via email and requested a custom built package, within one day everything was booked and sorted which is an amazing service. It was originally meant to be a private tour but Hari contacted me asking if someone else could join the tour and of course we said yes and it made it even more memorable. We were picked up from Medan airport by Konong and taken to Bukit by private car. We were welcomed with iced ginger tea and a big smile from Daddy Cool. We order food and it was all amazing! No matter what we had we were always impressed. Hari ran through everything that was happening in the week and then the boys took our luggage to our room which was beautiful. They had decorated the room with flowers as it was our honeymoon. The bed was comfy, A/C, and hot showers. Our tour guide for the week was Konong and We started our trip with a visit to the elephant sanctuary which was an unbelievable experience, walking with the elephants in the jungle was so surreal then had the chance to wash the elephants. Completely ethical, no rides and the elephants were treat like kings. We spent the evening chilling in daddy cools bar. We did the 2 day 1 night jungle experience, I was apprehensive about this as I am not the fittest. We met our guides helmi and amso and Konong came along too meaning we had one guide per person. They were all super helpful taking everything to my supper with no rushing and even provided jungle ac by fanning us on regular occasions. The often helped me by offering a hand to get over some of the obstacles in the way. They sent amso out into the jungle as a spotter then communicated with each other if a spot had been made meaning we walked straight to that location. We walked about 7 hours but it was at a leisurely pace and stopping regularly for fruit water and jungle information. The food prepared was amazing. We spotted a mother and a baby orangutan along with plenty of other monkeys. The baby orangutan was so close to us, she swang on a branch right up to me which took my breath away. Once we arrived at camp we went for a jungle shower and played games and had food prepared then went to sleep listening to the sound of the jungle and forest. The camp is basic but that can only be expected as you are in the middle of a jungle. We were awoken the next morning to amso telling us there was a male orangutan in the camp which was breathtaking. We then had a chill morning including a jungle massage off helmi then used the rafts to get back to bukit. They were great fun, laughing all the way down the river. We then visited the bat cave which was another amazing sight. We then returned to the hotel and had a right laugh with the guides about the experience we had. The next day we headed to lake toba which is a long drive but was broken down with regular stops to see waterfalls and the abandoned village. Lake toba and samosir island were stunning beautiful. Konong even managed to pull some strings so we had the king of the Batam village showing us around his village. We then went up to the kings grave and the view point, where we had a beer, but I don’t like beer so Konong arranged for me to drive to a shop to get a cocktail mix so we could enjoy together. Finally, this tour has been a once in a lifetime experience and I was so glad I chose this company. All the guides and staff regularly went above and beyond to assist you and really made the experience allowing you to tailor to whatever you need. All 3 guides had infectious laughs that just made you laugh and were always happy and smiling, and most importantly our personal photographers. You can tell that they really love their jobs and are passionate about the jungle and the orangutans. I would recommend this company to anyone as I’ve literally had the most amazing time and I’m sad that I’ve left Sumatra and the cheeky boys behind. Special shout out of konong who we had all week, you are amazing, and so knowledgeable, you really were the highlight of our trip. Love to you all and hope you are well, Your jungle queen Laura x

Exxelent tour, can everyone recommend it! - To give a summary. Exxelent tour! I would recommend everyone to book this tour who want to visit Gunung Leuser park, Sibayak Vulcano and Toba lake in a short period of time. All hotels, breafast, private car transport and activities are included. You only have to say where you want to be picked up around Medan and they arrange the rest. I recommend the Sumatra oerang utang trek as a team book activities in general. They are a local company, spend the money locally which is important People there. If you are interrested can better contact them directly and probably they can give you more value for money then via a "big" foreign broker. My personal experience in details Day 1 Picked up from hotel Polonia at 10.30 am in the city center of Medan. I met my tour guide Konong at the reception of the hotel and the first driver Berlin. Side note If you don't want to see something in Medan itself, I would recommend to stay near the airport or even better if you arrive in the early morning to be picked directly from the Airport. After pickup drove to an ATM because wanted to pay cash. The other option was PayPal. During the trip to Bukit Lawang I could talk a lot with Konong. Around 3.30pm we arrived in Bukit Lawang. There the host Dedycool gives you a warm welcome. You sit and relax over there. I met Heri the owner of the company. He tells you in details about the tour and checked my schedule when have to catch my flight in my example. Small remark for you Heri, please print out 1 A4 paper of the complete tour schedule and actities. I received so much information that I barely could absorp all at once. After everthing was clear for me I payed. I had still energy enough and Dedycool offered me to ride through Bukit Lawang by Motorbike. I ate at accommodation which was good. In the evening, more employees visit Bukit Lawang accommodation and played live music with there guitars. For me is was a good way to spend the evening and get to know each other. Day 2 In the morning we walked from Bukit Lawang to Gunung Leuser national park. The guides Amet and Konlong speak English very well. They have great knowlegde and experience. They see your physical condition and adapt the lenght of the route to reach the campsite around 4pm. Also dependent on the Weather. I have seen 6 Oerang Oetangs that day and several other monkey spices. At campsite I took a bath in the river. Food is included in the Jungle. I was happy to sleep on my own and could use 2 mattresses on top of each other and brought my earplugs with me because of the sound of the river. Day 3 Continued with the trekking around 10am. and around 2pm we arrived at the river to start the Tubing. I liked the jungle views when we went down the river. The current was strong and 25 minutes later we reached the destination. From there I took a tuk tuk to go to the Bukit Lawang accomodation. Again that evening I could join the team and they played songs together. Day 4 Went from Bukit Lawang to Berastagi. From now on Konong and driver Tepu where with me the rest of the tour. On the way, we visit a ghosttown which was stroke by the last eruption of the Sinabung Vulcano. Arrived around 4pm at a very nice hotel in Berastagi. Day 5 Walked in the early moring to the summit of the Sibayak vulcano. Then after breafast I went to lake and Toba Samosir island. On the way you see a lot of views of the lake. There was a long queue at the ferry. 4 hours we were at Samosir Island. Arrived around 7pm at the hotel. Had a nice dinner together. Day 6 Was more cultural and relax. In the morning visit a old Cannibal villlage. After 2pm there was some spare time. I was looking for a T-shirt as souvenir we heard from the local people there is a festival nearby. That evening my guide Konong and I went to a festival open Stage Tuk-Tuk Samosir island. It was a good experience. Day 7 Drove back from Samosir island to Medan airport. This time the queue for the ferry was not so long and I arrived at my hotel near the airport around 3pm. I want to thank the Sumatra oerang utang trek team for the wonderfull days I had. Althought I travelled on my own, I had the feeling to be part of the group. I want to thank my guide Konong in perticular. His broad knowlegde during the tour is impressive. During the trip had a couple times some nice conversations and we even went to a festival together! Thijs van der Aa Vorstenbosch The Netherlands Jungle trek from bukiii

Unforgettable experience - We are two Finnish teachers and this was our first time in Indonesia. I’m super glad we chose to start our trip in Sumatra. We had such a wonderful time on this trip! Our guide throughout the trip was Konong and he was amazing. He was really attentive, funny and really knows lot about his home country. Our stay in Bukit Lawang was superb and our hosts very welcoming. The atmosphere there was truly wonderful. The jungle trek was definitely one of the highlights of our trip. The trek is at times hard but definitely worth it. Seeing orangutans in their natural habitat is something I will never forget. Another highlight was the sunrise trek to mt sibayak, the views were unforgettable. Konong prepared a little breakfast for us at the top. There is nothing like sipping hot tea and watching the sun rise. I definitely recommend this trip to everyone.

The company has the most lovely cottage to stay in before and after the jungle trip and a lovely small place for dining. Here you will get the Best food we have had on Sumatra. We continued to Berastagi and lake Toba with the perfekt guide Konong, he is just amazing. Everything during the trip was well planned. Thanks for the most lovely trip for our family

A perfect start to our Indonesia honeymoon - My wife and I have been lucky to spend three weeks in Indonesia for our honeymoon, and we spent the first part of it with Sumatran Orangutan Treks. It proved to be a perfect, magical start to our honeymoon. We did the eight night/nine day tour (not listed on trip adviser but available on their website) and had an adventure every single day. We had a guide for the full trip, Konong, who was even there to pick us up and drop us off at the airport. Konong seems to know everything about Indonesia, particularly Sumatra, and spoke incredible English. He gave us many examples and insights into Indonesian life, as well as many laughs and expert photos. The jungle trek was incredible. We spent two nights in the jungle and managed to see nine orangutans, including two babies. We also saw many other birds, monkeys and apes, including the white gibbon. Our guide for the jungle, Helmi, was awesome: so much fun, so full of knowledge and he always kept us safe. We got to walk with and wash elephants in Tangkahan! Their elephant sanctuary is much more ethical than practices elsewhere. This seems to be a hidden gem that other travellers were less aware of, but it was a true highlight of our trip. Finally our time in Lake Toba was a great end to the trip - it's a stunning lake in the caldera of a supervolcano, and a great opportunity for exploration and relaxation. We had incredible food throughout the trip, but the lobster and fish at Jenny's Restaurant in Tuk Tuk was delicioussss. Don't miss out on this trip, it's the experience of a lifetime. Thank you Heri and Sumatran Orangutan Treks!

The best 9 days tour North Sumatra - I can’t recommend enough the tour, it has been one of the best trips we’ve ever been! The landscape, history and people have been amazing. We started our trip with a 3 days jungle trekking ( be aware that it is challenging and you will be walking 6/7 hours a day! But you have breaks in between and experienced and professional guides supporting you at every moment) we saw around 7 orangutan, turtles, peacocks, monkeys, birds…. The food was delicious and the rafting back to Bukit Lawang so much fun! I recommend to ask for Helmi, Konong and Bambang as your jungle guides, THEY ARE THE BEST: Helmi is such a jungle professional but also so caring and fun… he went over the moon to make sure we were all good, with always the nicest smile. I miss playing to orangutan and I hope to have a motorbike ride one day:) papa, mama and I miss you! Bambang has such a good eye to spot orangutan, thanks to him we saw so many! He has such a sweet heart! “Papa palo”, mama and I miss you :) Konong was our guide the whole 9 days and every day was amazing. He will make you laugh so much and always accomodate your needs. Also he is a photographer, as a plus we got amazing pictures thanks to him! Papa, mama and Maria hope to see you again in Spain:) WE MISS YOU ALL! Thanks for the great days together around the jungle Day 4 we did one day with elephants, all the activities and tour and sustainable, taking into consideration ethical and ecological values and we loved it! In Bukit Lawang accomodation and food was so delicious and live music at night with such a great people create such a nice atmosphere every evening, thank you all the staff there! After Bukit Lawang we continued to the much cooler highlands of Berastagi and Lake Toba. With Konong we went to local markets to taste the most amazing dishes and snacks the Indonesian cuisine has to offer, traveling by ferry to Lake Toba and immerse in the history and culture of Samosir island. Accomodation and food were great and the drivers were amazing! I did this trip with my parents and I can thank enough how caring, sweet and nice they were. We all forgot our hearts there ( as Helmi and Konong used to say) and we hope we can come back one day. We definitely recommend to book a tour with them and to enjoy the best trip around Sumatra you could ask for! P.S My parents are over 60 and it was great for them, but at times the hiking was challenging so I recommend you to talk to them in advanced if you have any concerns :)
